What is a specialty pharmacy?

A specialty pharmacy is a pharmacy that focuses on patients with complicated medical conditions. Specialty patients have medications that require close monitoring and follow-up and are often very expensive.

We help patients understand their conditions and their medications, including why they are taking them, how they work, and how to take them. Patient education is key to following the prescribed treatment.

What makes us different?

Many specialty medications are not available at typical retail pharmacies, which is why your prescriptions often end up in the mail-order system. These medicines are called limited distribution drugs. We have access to these drugs.

​We are local. Our families live and work here. When we need to work with your doctors, we can get in touch with them and even go to their offices when necessary. We can even come to you when you cannot come to us. We take the time and tailor your plan of care specific to you, your life, and your doctor’s treatment plans. We want to find out what works best for you and do that.

Do I need to have a specialty pharmacy and a regular pharmacy?

No. As a patient with Appalachian Specialty Pharmacy, we want to make your life easier rather than more complicated. We are committed to taking care of all your pharmacy needs, including your regular medicines and those of your caregivers and family support team.​

Doctors and specialist often don’t see the whole picture of medicines you take. Safety, effectiveness, and affordability are usually greatly improved when one pharmacist sees what is going on and can step in with doctors and insurance companies to help.

Can I get all my medications filled with Appalachian Specialty Pharmacy?

We can fill all your prescriptions in most cases. In the event you have a medication that we cannot fill, we will find a pharmacy that can fill it and provide a warm hand-off of that prescription. We will follow that prescription to make sure it is filled and delivered to you when you need it. When we develop a care plan for you, we mean to really take care of you and not let you get lost in the system or go without proper care.

What is the policy on returning medications?

In most cases, sales of specialty medications are final. It is important to get it right the first time. Our ability to work closely with you, your doctors, and your insurance company is what helps us get it right and avoid costly mistakes.

How do I dispose of unneeded/unused medication?

The best way to dispose of unused or unneeded medication is to find a local drug take-back program. We can guide you to the nearest facility to dispose of unused medication.

If you need to dispose of medication at home, follow these steps:

  • Mix medicines (do not crush tablets or capsules) with an unpalatable substance such as dirt, kitty litter, or used coffee grounds
  • Place the mixture in a container such as a sealed plastic bag
  • Throw the container in your household trash
  • Scratch out all personal information on the prescription label of your empty pill bottle or empty medicine packaging to make it unreadable, then dispose of the container
