How do I dispose of unneeded/unused medication?
The best way to dispose of unused or unneeded medication is to find a local drug take-back program. We can guide you to the nearest facility to dispose of unused medication.
If you need to dispose of medication at home, follow these steps:
- Mix medicines (do not crush tablets or capsules) with an unpalatable substance such as dirt, kitty litter, or used coffee grounds
- Place the mixture in a container such as a sealed plastic bag
- Throw the container in your household trash
- Scratch out all personal information on the prescription label of your empty pill bottle or empty medicine packaging to make it unreadable, then dispose of the container
In general, flushing medications is not an environmentally friendly means of medication disposal. For more information, please call us at (888) 747-9533.
